MIGRATION TO EUROPE

November 6, 2011

Seniors face a different situation because they have to think about serious future employment.

For many bachelor's students in the Czech Republic, the only opportunity to earn extra money is to find a good “brigade.” The classic brigade is a part-time job for a certain period of time that does not require special skills and training, for instance, work in supermarkets, warehouses, delivering letters and leaflets.

Krautstengl, while not agreeing to any refunds, responded that there is a legal point of view but also one of “simple logic.” And - as the president pointed out - he is a mathematician.

Protests from a group of Anglo-American University law students over fees they call “rather questionable steps” have caused the school to reverse itself on two of the three issues they raised in an open letter in March.

The group of 10 students of the Comparative Law program, who submitted the letter to president Alan Krautstengl, met with him to discuss AAU’s handling of new textbook fees, foreign student tuition rules and its collection methods for students who owe fees.

“He has a rock and roll attitude towards life. He’s never stressed," says Jiři Chvojka.

After his French 2 class, held near the library, Honza Hladík headed next door to Gloria Jean’s Coffee for his interview with ALW.

A first-year International Relations student studying his second semester at AAU, a tall Hladík in his very recognizable black rimmed glasses, gives a warm hello and treats himself to a Cappuccino before getting ready for our interview.

“Excusez-moi,” he says, fresh from his last class and apologizing for his short delay.

As the West is overwhelmed by debt, developing countries are playing a vital role in economic and global stability. The 21st century belongs to Asia, but will those countries abuse their new sense of power and prosperity?

“We found out by accident,” said Julie Kolmanová and Kamila Hrebicková, also third year Humanities students at AAU. Kolmanová told ALW that she and her friends were told about the tuition discount through a friend who says that he read the information on a poster he saw around school.

There are continuing students from the 2009/2010 scholastic year that still don’t know about the 10 percent discount in tuition available to them for the current 2011 Spring semester. However, that does not mean it doesn’t exist. All you have to do is ask the Finance Office for your discount and they will gladly give it to you.

WASC accreditation will place AAU in a more elite educational league in which it will receive the same academic acclaim as the 165 senior universities and colleges already included in the association.

AAU student Chris Hartland said that there are more acute problems  for the administration to deal with. "For me it is just a place to work with really unreliable Internet. Also, for a library it has very little light," he said, "ironically, making it hard to read books. "

On March 4 the AAU library hosted a musical performance for the first time. Gentry Bronson calls himself a troubadour and dedicates his songs to what he calls the "unsung heroes" of everyday life. His concert of piano ballads at the library was part of his European tour. Afterwards the audience was welcome to join the artist and his friends for drinks at Watermill on Kampa, 10 minutes from the venue.

How much will AAU have to change its academic standards to better suit those CEA requires?

Anglo-American University’s students can look forward to seeing more exchange students from the U.S due to a special global partnership agreement Anglo-American University has in place with the Arizona-based CEA study abroad program.

AAU’s full-time students have yet to find out what this really means for their academic future, but the influx is not always welcome by locals, it seems.

After a night of drinking at the Mecca club, Block’s roommate threw himself against window, which gave way, leaving a four-inch gash on his arm and wrist. A cab was quickly hailed and took the pair to the nearest hospital.

On her fourth day in Prague Kelly Mytinger, an international student who came to study at Anglo-American University without the assistance of a program provider, found herself with an ear and sinus infection.

As she struggled to communicate this information to the receptionist at Fakultni Thomayerova Hospital in February, Mytinger took in her surroundings. Dingy. Sketchy. Doubts of whether she was at a credible hospital ran through her congested head as she stood confused at the counter of what her research told her was an English-speaking institution.

As it is stated in the report the psychological advising center for AAU students is an “ongoing project.”

One being a mention of plans for new psychological and career building centers. As with most parties, there are a few unsaid protocols that students and most locals tend to follow. One being, no one shows up early.

The new semester has started at Anglo-American University, bringing along with it a new batch of students and cold weather.  AAU's Student Council and NYU decided to warm up the semester with a well advertised welcome back party taking place in the nook of Charles Bridge, Lavka Bar and Club.

The council under Padolsky was not the first the school has known but it is possibly its most successful. "From what I understand, there were other attempts to form the student council before but it never worked quite all right," she explained. "This is really the first elections we have held."

As another semester creeps up on us, we as students are saddled with the never-ending burden of finding things to occupy our time - outside of pullin' all-nighters. With the multitude of options Prague has to offer, I would like to officially announce that the Anglo-American Student Council is alive and well - and will be offering the AAU Student Body the opportunity to participate in a whole host of leisure activities.
