Welcome back after the break! AAU's student council invites to the first party of the semester. Friday 17 at RadostFX.

 Dear students,

November 10, 2011

Foreign students often experience a variety of problems that Czech students don’t usually notice. These foreign students simply lack the information they need: residency and labor laws (how to find a job/obtain a visa) and social issues (where to find new friends, NGOs for migrants, problems with tolerance, medical care).

Despite being an international university in Prague, the Anglo-American University currently does not provide any counseling service to its international students who are bound to face emotional difficulties that go with living in a new country, perhaps away from their parents and friends. But do students that face these issues actually want such a service?

After enjoying the party atmosphere for the first half of the cruise, junior English major William Smith said, “I was ready to leave. And this was a problem since swimming to shore was not an option for me.”

Anglo-American University students gave mixed reviews of the Student Council-administered snow themed summer boat party with disc jockeys from Dance Radio Sept. 16.

The "Summer Snow Boat Party" on the open-air ship Tyrs, cruising along the Vltava River, made for a chilly evening.

Seniors face a different situation because they have to think about serious future employment.

For many bachelor's students in the Czech Republic, the only opportunity to earn extra money is to find a good “brigade.” The classic brigade is a part-time job for a certain period of time that does not require special skills and training, for instance, work in supermarkets, warehouses, delivering letters and leaflets.

AAU students get 50 % off ticket prices at the city's biggest and best Halloween party on Thursday, October 27, when Prague TV's Monster Ball returns to the Retro Music Hall.

Taking advantage of Friday's public holiday, Prague TV throws the city's biggest and best Halloween party on Thursday, October 27, when the Monster Ball returns to the Retro Music Hall.

For this year's party, the live music comes courtesy of CCTV Allstars, an international Prague-based band who play an energetic blend of ska, folk, reggae and rock.

Long entrance, bar and bathroom queues and Dance Radio can't spoil the party. Students stuck on a boat for 4,5 hours makes for good times eventually.

“Hello everyone!” The reminder about the Snow Boat Party sent out through Facebook started with these exact words. Considering how it turned out they really meant everyone. One might think a big crowd would mean a great party, but it didn't really work that way.

"My dad used to always bring me back some candy when he would travel to the States on business, and I fell in love with them right away" AAU alumni Marek Čermák told the Prague Post.

From Sept. 28th til Oct. 2nd, students will be able to vote for twelve new members to run your SC this coming year. This time around, voting will take place in our Student Lounge (the old “new cafeteria”) throughout that week.

AAU’s student council has accomplished many things in the past two years: parties, movie nights, international student’s day, a Christmas charity event, ISIC school ID cards, cooperation with other schools, our first ever ball... the list goes on.

And with a new year upon us, student council elections are not far behind.

From Sept. 28th til Oct. 2nd, students will be able to vote for twelve new members to run your SC this coming year, and while old members may choose to run again, new candidates are welcome to run as well.

Krautstengl, while not agreeing to any refunds, responded that there is a legal point of view but also one of “simple logic.” And - as the president pointed out - he is a mathematician.

Protests from a group of Anglo-American University law students over fees they call “rather questionable steps” have caused the school to reverse itself on two of the three issues they raised in an open letter in March.

The group of 10 students of the Comparative Law program, who submitted the letter to president Alan Krautstengl, met with him to discuss AAU’s handling of new textbook fees, foreign student tuition rules and its collection methods for students who owe fees.

Marek Vaculcík and his team carried out the big night, an event to remember not just for its grandeur. It was also an occasion for the students to show the school that they do have a say. “We want to be taken seriously as the representatives of students, and we also want to become recognizable and a major part of the school,” said Altyn Shekkaliyeva.

Despite a period of uncertainty and wrestling with school administration, the Student Council managed to launch Anglo-American University’s first ball in style in April in the grand 19th-century Narodni dum in Vinohrady.

Among community barricades at an international school, language barriers are surely a key contributor. Especially when the national language seems to lack the use of vowels in words and the rolling effect of the hacek could make a non-native speaker lose their gum.

Anglo-American University attracts students and staff from all corners of the globe, which results in its quirky culture. Being a Canadian born with a Czech last name - and someone who is often mistaken for an American exchange student - I can school you on the top five issues I’ve observed going into my second semester. But I have also realized that it is these issues that make our school an experience different from any other.

“I wanted it to personify the essence and spirit of a group,” she says. “Then I understood that passion is the word that describes us.”

Anglo-American University’s first dance team is seeking girls for whom dance is not just a word.

With the slogan “come and dance with us for fun and competitively,” the group aims to add something missing at AAU since its founding in 1990. This semester, law student Dajana Imenova got the idea of creating a dance crew when she first enrolled.

“Life is dance,” she says. “A good dance group is the face of the university.” In February Imenova won approval from the Student Council.

Then there’s Pavla Jonsonnová, who teaches a course in Subcultures and is most probably the peak musician of all the AAU faculty.

Students of courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences school shouldn’t be too surprised to find their professors jamming on stage when they head out clubbing after class.

Talking to Anglo-American University professors often turns up by their great love for music. Some are jazz fanatics who would go anytime, anywhere by any means of transport to see a great gig. AAU professor John Brent confides he once canceled a U.S. history lecture because he was going hitchhiking to a Vienna jazz concert.

“I come for the girls,” said Vitor Fernandes, an Erasmus student at VSE. “I go to an all-male university in Portugal, so I love being able to party with so many beautiful girls.”

AAU students looking to mix with other international students can do so every week during the semester through the Nation2Nation student parties.

Each week, students from a particular country or region prepare food, music and games from their culture. This semester saw Scandinavian-, Asian- and Latin-themed nights, among others.

“He has a rock and roll attitude towards life. He’s never stressed," says Jiři Chvojka.

After his French 2 class, held near the library, Honza Hladík headed next door to Gloria Jean’s Coffee for his interview with ALW.

A first-year International Relations student studying his second semester at AAU, a tall Hladík in his very recognizable black rimmed glasses, gives a warm hello and treats himself to a Cappuccino before getting ready for our interview.

“Excusez-moi,” he says, fresh from his last class and apologizing for his short delay.
