After decades in their professions, George and Helena decided to buy a flat and rent out rooms to support themselves through retirement. The idea was that they could live the rest of their lives without another day of work. “A new way to make a living,” as Helena describes.

Rain trickles down off the gutters as George Kafka looks out upon his gorgeous view overlooking the Vltava River.

Inside, books flutter on the shelves, and pictures of grandchildren illuminate the walls. From the kitchen the smell of apricot cobbler and fresh espresso dry us from the rain.

Every hour every time of the year crowds of tourists gather on Prague's Old Town Square to videotape, photograph and look at the Astronomical Clock's little show. A look at what's there they still may not see.

A group of Czech elementary school kids is having lunch break on the curb. They are facing hundreds of foreign tourists staring at Prague's Astronomical Clock. Everyone's here to see the show. As I entered Tesla Arena, home of the Sparta Praha Hockey team, a sea of burgundy and white Praha jerseys flooded my vision. Everywhere I turned my head I saw hundreds of these with the exception of a few blue New York Rangers jerseys mixed about within the mass.

The English Club, which has been running for several years, allows the children to “form a positive relationship to English through fun activities and games and then it is also easier for them to learn English at school,” explains Tučková.

On a late Friday autumn afternoon a group of six students from the International School of Prague are making their way up a crowded street to start their first day this year as volunteers. 

They arrive at a five-story apartment building in Prague 2 with their mentor, Christine Reeb. They navigate their way through a small courtyard before entering a brightly lit hallway lined with a shelves overflowing with a variety of colorful informational brochures about programs at InBáze Berkat, the community center.
