Coming to Prague was “an intuitive thing. I needed to be here to learn many things about myself. It wasn’t going to be easy but I needed to be here.”

In the famously crowded and popular Café Louvre in the center of Prague, Natalia Vasquez leans across the small table, catching up with an old friend. Dressed in a beige pleated sweater with curly black hair framing her brown animated eyes, she is relaxed and at ease amidst the loud atmosphere.

Every hour every time of the year crowds of tourists gather on Prague's Old Town Square to videotape, photograph and look at the Astronomical Clock's little show. A look at what's there they still may not see.

By Chris Lettner - Prague, Old Town Square, Oct. 4, 1.58 p.m. - Within 10 minutes a crowd has gathered in the nook of the square around the Old Town Hall tower. A group of Czech elementary school kids is having lunch break on the curb. They are facing hundreds of foreign tourists staring at Prague's Astronomical Clock. Everyone's here to see the show. Fingers are pointing.

The English Club, which has been running for several years, allows the children to “form a positive relationship to English through fun activities and games and then it is also easier for them to learn English at school,” explains Tučková.

On a late Friday autumn afternoon a group of six students from the International School of Prague are making their way up a crowded street to start their first day this year as volunteers.

They arrive at a five-story apartment building in Prague 2 with their mentor, Christine Reeb. They navigate their way through a small courtyard before entering a brightly lit hallway lined with a shelves overflowing with a variety of colorful informational brochures about programs at InBáze Berkat, the community center.

Augé never wanted to become a teacher. “I was too rebellious a student,” he says. But studying in California changed his idea of what a teacher’s job can be. He says he now loves his job and the idea of a university as well as the variety of students he encounters.

AAU professor Étienne François Augé believes an instructor should be more than just a lecturer in the classroom.

A prolific author of books and essays, he wants “to bring university to a more general audience” through his writing.

In his latest book, L’Illusion Culturelle: Hollywood et la Propaganda: 1990–2000, Augé explores the connection between Hollywood and propaganda for more than 600 pages but reaches no definite conclusion.

Krautstengl, while not agreeing to any refunds, responded that there is a legal point of view but also one of “simple logic.” And - as the president pointed out - he is a mathematician.

Protests from a group of Anglo-American University law students over fees they call “rather questionable steps” have caused the school to reverse itself on two of the three issues they raised in an open letter in March.

The group of 10 students of the Comparative Law program, who submitted the letter to president Alan Krautstengl, met with him to discuss AAU’s handling of new textbook fees, foreign student tuition rules and its collection methods for students who owe fees.

Translation is more than just finding the equivalent of a word in another language; it's about interpreting the information we hear and read and adapting it to our existing knowledge.

Those were the opening words at the seventh annual Normal-Abnormal colloquium at AAU, spoken by the event's organizer, AAU instructor Eva Eckert. The words are also particularly relevant to AAU students, she said

Then there’s Pavla Jonsonnová, who teaches a course in Subcultures and is most probably the peak musician of all the AAU faculty.

Students of courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences school shouldn’t be too surprised to find their professors jamming on stage when they head out clubbing after class.

Talking to Anglo-American University professors often turns up by their great love for music. Some are jazz fanatics who would go anytime, anywhere by any means of transport to see a great gig. AAU professor John Brent confides he once canceled a U.S. history lecture because he was going hitchhiking to a Vienna jazz concert.

“He has a rock and roll attitude towards life. He’s never stressed," says Jiři Chvojka.

After his French 2 class, held near the library, Honza Hladík headed next door to Gloria Jean’s Coffee for his interview with ALW.

A first-year International Relations student studying his second semester at AAU, a tall Hladík in his very recognizable black rimmed glasses, gives a warm hello and treats himself to a Cappuccino before getting ready for our interview.

“Excusez-moi,” he says, fresh from his last class and apologizing for his short delay.

As the West is overwhelmed by debt, developing countries are playing a vital role in economic and global stability. The 21st century belongs to Asia, but will those countries abuse their new sense of power and prosperity?

For Anglo-American University professors, skipping has become an issue within their classes. There is a correlation between students who study abroad and their attendance in class at Anglo-American University. When students come to study abroad, many put their school priorities almost dead last.

AAU student Chris Hartland said that there are more acute problems  for the administration to deal with. "For me it is just a place to work with really unreliable Internet. Also, for a library it has very little light," he said, "ironically, making it hard to read books. "

On March 4 the AAU library hosted a musical performance for the first time. Gentry Bronson calls himself a troubadour and dedicates his songs to what he calls the "unsung heroes" of everyday life. His concert of piano ballads at the library was part of his European tour. Afterwards the audience was welcome to join the artist and his friends for drinks at Watermill on Kampa, 10 minutes from the venue.

How much will AAU have to change its academic standards to better suit those CEA requires?

Anglo-American University’s students can look forward to seeing more exchange students from the U.S due to a special global partnership agreement Anglo-American University has in place with the Arizona-based CEA study abroad program.

AAU’s full-time students have yet to find out what this really means for their academic future, but the influx is not always welcome by locals, it seems.
