Seniors face a different situation because they have to think about serious future employment.

For many bachelor's students in the Czech Republic, the only opportunity to earn extra money is to find a good “brigade.” The classic brigade is a part-time job for a certain period of time that does not require special skills and training, for instance, work in supermarkets, warehouses, delivering letters and leaflets.

“We did quite well,” says Sandilya. “I wouldn’t say we were super successful but we did quite well.”

Anglo-American University was the only Czech University to send a delegation to the 57th Harvard Model United Nations Conference in Boston in February.

The group was larger and more successful than the one last year, with AAU students spending two weeks in the United States. Model UN conference aside, four of them met the Andorran ambassador at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

“We found out by accident,” said Julie Kolmanová and Kamila Hrebicková, also third year Humanities students at AAU. Kolmanová told ALW that she and her friends were told about the tuition discount through a friend who says that he read the information on a poster he saw around school.

There are continuing students from the 2009/2010 scholastic year that still don’t know about the 10 percent discount in tuition available to them for the current 2011 Spring semester. However, that does not mean it doesn’t exist. All you have to do is ask the Finance Office for your discount and they will gladly give it to you.

When he was "just a kid" he would take baths with "two nice black twin sisters from next door." He says that it was nothing since they were all so young but that there was "racial harmony in the bathtub."

A man some students meet at least once a week is not just a teacher but a well-travelled person of many experiences and occupations.

Robert Ellmann teaches wide range of subjects in which he shares with the pupils his wealth of knowledge and outlook on philosophy. Sitting in the cafeteria, looking through papers for his next lecture, Ellmann started to answer questions at first a little nervously, not knowing what was coming, but quickly he became relaxed and forthcoming.

Anglo-American University's new student council president, Mario Nicolaou, approaches his job with more realism than idealism.
"It's not about saying, it's about doing," said Nicolaou, "What I say happens; that's how I am."
The purpose of student council is to promote student activities and build cohesiveness among the student body. But AAU has only about 450 students and some students take only one or two classes. Many lack the time for or interest in building a community.
In addition, the council's budget is limited to just CZK 60,000 a year.

Less than four years after their entrance into the European Union, Czechs have become some of the continent's best cannabis consumers. It's an image that the country is not especially proud of.
"Everybody must get stoned," sang Bob Dylan, The Doors, the Wailers... and the list of bands endorsing marijuana goes on and on. Their message is clear: Weed is a soft drug so let's roll, folks!

By around 3:30pm the Skinheads started gathering at the Charles University Law Faculty. In all there were twenty, the rest were Anti-Fascist demonstrators. More and more Anti-fascists started gathering, and then the police started showing up. The police came with armored trucks with crowd control panels welded to the front. The crowds were growing thicker, and then suddenly everyone rushed to the side of the faculty building. A man had taken a trashcan and started to bash a student's face with one of the narrow metal trashcans outside the building. After the attack the student disappeared as well as the attacker. A square foot sized puddle of blood was on the ground. About three feet away was the dented trashcan. On the wall, between the blood and trash can hung a plaque dedicated to victims of the Nazi occupation that were thrown over the nearby bridge May 5, 1945 as a result of the Prague Uprising only four days before the regime fell.

As summertime nears, students plot their plans for months of freedom, the perfect chance for extended trips to explore new cultures. But preparing for life after college is also critical, and summer employment is a perfect way to do this. There are many opportunities to do both work and exploration, although few students take advantage of them, setting apart those who do.

"[It was] like Prague October weather, but inside," said Sbroscia.

After weeks in which classrooms were too hot and years in which they were too cold, the AAU staff appears finally to have gotten the classrooms temperatures about right.

As the weather became colder in October and November, the university turned the heat up, making some classrooms uncomfortably hot. Now, the temperatures have come down a few degrees, and the school appears to have found a happy medium.

"It was hotter before, but now it's better," said Emilia Sbroscia, a first-year International Relations student.
