Students are given opportunity to improve school’s operation.

In efforts to improve operations at Anglo-American University, the school has decided to
establish committees of students, faculty and alumni to represent diverse perspectives. The
committees are a part of AAU’s application process to the Western Association of Schools and
Colleges, an American accreditation body.
“We are built on the American and British tradition, so we want to have a
stronger presence and better recognition in the U.S.,” said Katarina Svítková, AAU’s

With every new semester comes the swarm of students from overseas. While some students are excited with the new additions to Anglo-American University, some are not as pleased.

MIGRATION TO EUROPE

Despite being an international university in Prague, the Anglo-American University currently does not provide any counseling service to its international students who are bound to face emotional difficulties that go with living in a new country, perhaps away from their parents and friends. But do students that face these issues actually want such a service?

After enjoying the party atmosphere for the first half of the cruise, junior English major William Smith said, “I was ready to leave. And this was a problem since swimming to shore was not an option for me.”

Anglo-American University students gave mixed reviews of the Student Council-administered snow themed summer boat party with disc jockeys from Dance Radio Sept. 16.

The "Summer Snow Boat Party" on the open-air ship Tyrs, cruising along the Vltava River, made for a chilly evening.

The exhibition started at |art|SPACE, the art gallery of Anglo-American University, on May, 6 as part of Transeuropa, for the first time taking place in Prague as a part of the multi-national both cultural festival and political event. This time unlike the opening the visitors have a chance to talk to the artist himself.

Krautstengl, while not agreeing to any refunds, responded that there is a legal point of view but also one of “simple logic.” And - as the president pointed out - he is a mathematician.

Protests from a group of Anglo-American University law students over fees they call “rather questionable steps” have caused the school to reverse itself on two of the three issues they raised in an open letter in March.

The group of 10 students of the Comparative Law program, who submitted the letter to president Alan Krautstengl, met with him to discuss AAU’s handling of new textbook fees, foreign student tuition rules and its collection methods for students who owe fees.

Marek Vaculcík and his team carried out the big night, an event to remember not just for its grandeur. It was also an occasion for the students to show the school that they do have a say. “We want to be taken seriously as the representatives of students, and we also want to become recognizable and a major part of the school,” said Altyn Shekkaliyeva.

Despite a period of uncertainty and wrestling with school administration, the Student Council managed to launch Anglo-American University’s first ball in style in April in the grand 19th-century Narodni dum in Vinohrady.

Among community barricades at an international school, language barriers are surely a key contributor. Especially when the national language seems to lack the use of vowels in words and the rolling effect of the hacek could make a non-native speaker lose their gum.

Anglo-American University attracts students and staff from all corners of the globe, which results in its quirky culture. Being a Canadian born with a Czech last name - and someone who is often mistaken for an American exchange student - I can school you on the top five issues I’ve observed going into my second semester. But I have also realized that it is these issues that make our school an experience different from any other.

“I wanted it to personify the essence and spirit of a group,” she says. “Then I understood that passion is the word that describes us.”

Anglo-American University’s first dance team is seeking girls for whom dance is not just a word.

With the slogan “come and dance with us for fun and competitively,” the group aims to add something missing at AAU since its founding in 1990. This semester, law student Dajana Imenova got the idea of creating a dance crew when she first enrolled.

“Life is dance,” she says. “A good dance group is the face of the university.” In February Imenova won approval from the Student Council.

Then there’s Pavla Jonsonnová, who teaches a course in Subcultures and is most probably the peak musician of all the AAU faculty.

Students of courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences school shouldn’t be too surprised to find their professors jamming on stage when they head out clubbing after class.

Talking to Anglo-American University professors often turns up by their great love for music. Some are jazz fanatics who would go anytime, anywhere by any means of transport to see a great gig. AAU professor John Brent confides he once canceled a U.S. history lecture because he was going hitchhiking to a Vienna jazz concert.

“We did quite well,” says Sandilya. “I wouldn’t say we were super successful but we did quite well.”

Anglo-American University was the only Czech University to send a delegation to the 57th Harvard Model United Nations Conference in Boston in February.

The group was larger and more successful than the one last year, with AAU students spending two weeks in the United States. Model UN conference aside, four of them met the Andorran ambassador at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

For Anglo-American University professors, skipping has become an issue within their classes. There is a correlation between students who study abroad and their attendance in class at Anglo-American University. When students come to study abroad, many put their school priorities almost dead last.

“My internship has provided me with the answer to a nagging question: What exactly is a student of humanities supposed to do after finishing school?”

Students at Anglo-American University are getting involved in the contemporary art community through Professor Karina Kottova’s Cultural Projects Planning class.

The course provides students with experience in art, education and management fields. Kottova requires students to get involved with practical work in the community with an individual cultural project.

CEA student Russell King says, “I want to eat my goulash and not feel like I am eating out of an ash tray.” However, King said he thinks smoking is an essential part of Czech culture.

Students at Anglo-American University agree: Smoking is a part of Czech culture. If smoking is banned in Czech restaurants, AAU students will be upset. Among the 47 AAU students interviewed for this story, the general consensus is that it is not fair to ban smoking from pubs and restaurants across the country. Even students who do not smoke agree.

Almost 200 CEA students enrolled into Anglo-American University this spring. With a normal student size 500, the mixing of students from different cultures within such small class sizes can be a challenge.

Mason Truluck unknowingly began to take advantage of her study abroad experience on the first day of class. She missed the day when her class divided up groups for presentations, leaving her to be a part of a multicultural group. She accepted the challenge. “This group project forces me to step outside of my comfort zone,” Truluck said.

How much will AAU have to change its academic standards to better suit those CEA requires?

Anglo-American University’s students can look forward to seeing more exchange students from the U.S due to a special global partnership agreement Anglo-American University has in place with the Arizona-based CEA study abroad program.

AAU’s full-time students have yet to find out what this really means for their academic future, but the influx is not always welcome by locals, it seems.

After a night of drinking at the Mecca club, Block’s roommate threw himself against window, which gave way, leaving a four-inch gash on his arm and wrist. A cab was quickly hailed and took the pair to the nearest hospital.

On her fourth day in Prague Kelly Mytinger, an international student who came to study at Anglo-American University without the assistance of a program provider, found herself with an ear and sinus infection.

As she struggled to communicate this information to the receptionist at Fakultni Thomayerova Hospital in February, Mytinger took in her surroundings. Dingy. Sketchy. Doubts of whether she was at a credible hospital ran through her congested head as she stood confused at the counter of what her research told her was an English-speaking institution.
