Krautstengl, while not agreeing to any refunds, responded that there is a legal point of view but also one of “simple logic.” And - as the president pointed out - he is a mathematician.

Protests from a group of Anglo-American University law students over fees they call “rather questionable steps” have caused the school to reverse itself on two of the three issues they raised in an open letter in March.

The group of 10 students of the Comparative Law program, who submitted the letter to president Alan Krautstengl, met with him to discuss AAU’s handling of new textbook fees, foreign student tuition rules and its collection methods for students who owe fees.

Marek Vaculcík and his team carried out the big night, an event to remember not just for its grandeur. It was also an occasion for the students to show the school that they do have a say. “We want to be taken seriously as the representatives of students, and we also want to become recognizable and a major part of the school,” said Altyn Shekkaliyeva.

Despite a period of uncertainty and wrestling with school administration, the Student Council managed to launch Anglo-American University’s first ball in style in April in the grand 19th-century Narodni dum in Vinohrady.

Among community barricades at an international school, language barriers are surely a key contributor. Especially when the national language seems to lack the use of vowels in words and the rolling effect of the hacek could make a non-native speaker lose their gum.

Anglo-American University attracts students and staff from all corners of the globe, which results in its quirky culture. Being a Canadian born with a Czech last name - and someone who is often mistaken for an American exchange student - I can school you on the top five issues I’ve observed going into my second semester. But I have also realized that it is these issues that make our school an experience different from any other.

Translation is more than just finding the equivalent of a word in another language; it's about interpreting the information we hear and read and adapting it to our existing knowledge.

Those were the opening words at the seventh annual Normal-Abnormal colloquium at AAU, spoken by the event's organizer, AAU instructor Eva Eckert. The words are also particularly relevant to AAU students, she said

“We found out by accident,” said Julie Kolmanová and Kamila Hrebicková, also third year Humanities students at AAU. Kolmanová told ALW that she and her friends were told about the tuition discount through a friend who says that he read the information on a poster he saw around school.

There are continuing students from the 2009/2010 scholastic year that still don’t know about the 10 percent discount in tuition available to them for the current 2011 Spring semester. However, that does not mean it doesn’t exist. All you have to do is ask the Finance Office for your discount and they will gladly give it to you.

How much will AAU have to change its academic standards to better suit those CEA requires?

Anglo-American University’s students can look forward to seeing more exchange students from the U.S due to a special global partnership agreement Anglo-American University has in place with the Arizona-based CEA study abroad program.

AAU’s full-time students have yet to find out what this really means for their academic future, but the influx is not always welcome by locals, it seems.

AAU President Alan Krautstengel received an open letter this week that asks him to rethink new out-of-state fee and book-administration-fee policies and demands a public apology for the list of students with outstanding financial obligations the school put up. Who wrote the letter, what does it say and what happens next?

AAU President Alan Krautstengel received an open letter this week that asks him to rethink new out-of-state fee and book-administration-fee policies and demands a public apology for the list of students with outstanding financial obligations the school put up. The letter comes from a group of ten Comparative Law students.

The letter's three main concerns are:

When he was "just a kid" he would take baths with "two nice black twin sisters from next door." He says that it was nothing since they were all so young but that there was "racial harmony in the bathtub."

A man some students meet at least once a week is not just a teacher but a well-travelled person of many experiences and occupations.

Robert Ellmann teaches wide range of subjects in which he shares with the pupils his wealth of knowledge and outlook on philosophy. Sitting in the cafeteria, looking through papers for his next lecture, Ellmann started to answer questions at first a little nervously, not knowing what was coming, but quickly he became relaxed and forthcoming.

Confusion over a 10 percent tuition discount promised by Anglo-American University last year is finally being resolved.

Confusion over a 10 percent tuition discount promised by Anglo-American University last year is finally being resolved. In October 2009 the school made the offer to continuing students to help offset a significant tuition increase for new students, announcing that it was to be for the entire school year of 2010-2011. Returning students this fall, however were initially offered the deal only for that semester. Now they've been told that if they request it for spring semester, it will be granted for that period as well.

As another semester creeps up on us, we as students are saddled with the never-ending burden of finding things to occupy our time - outside of pullin' all-nighters. With the multitude of options Prague has to offer, I would like to officially announce that the Anglo-American Student Council is alive and well - and will be offering the AAU Student Body the opportunity to participate in a whole host of leisure activities.
