AAU students, meet Jiří Brodský, a former student and now the deputy director of the foreign affairs department in the Office of the Czech President.
During a recent interview, he said AAU was important to his success and taught him lessons that any student could benefit from in his studies or work.

The school offers different types scholarship: The merit-based grant requires them to maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 and to complete eight courses over the last two semesters. The need-based scholarship, meanwhile, helps students who have to deal with changing financial circumstances.

Starting February 1, 2009, Anglo-American University will increase wages for working students from 75 crowns per hour to 85 crowns.
Lenka Turečková, the AAU's operations manager, said this is the first student wage hike in approximately two years.
"We want to motivate students, meet their needs," she said.
With the economic situation deteriorating, more and more students are expected to be attracted to working on campus, where they can cover their living costs without interfering with their class schedules.

In May 2009, Anglo-American University will welcome back Cypriot artist Theopisti Stylianou to teach a documentary photography course over the summer aimed at helping students create fresh pictures of Prague.
"My goal is to work with a diverse and motivated group of students to help them discover, follow, and shape their own photographic voice," said Stylianou.

The number of private universities continues to grow in the Czech Republic and the country is slowly approaching the British and Australian models of education, according to research carried out by Mlada fronta Dnes.
The first privately funded school of higher education was established 10 years ago and today the country has some 46 private universities.

As another semester creeps up on us, we as students are saddled with the never-ending burden of finding things to occupy our time - outside of pullin' all-nighters. With the multitude of options Prague has to offer, I would like to officially announce that the Anglo-American Student Council is alive and well - and will be offering the AAU Student Body the opportunity to participate in a whole host of leisure activities.

Kateřina's situation is typical. She is a dentistry student and took time to describe her own experiences and those of her friends with discrimination. She declined to use her full name for this interview.

She told the story of a female friend of hers, who had a bad experience with a male professor who was known for making fun of female students.

Anglo-American University takes pride in offering different teachers from diverse countries with several specializations. One of them is Ivan Gutierrez, a Columbian, whom some know as a teacher of Intro to Philosophy and Composition. Off campus, however, he is not really known as a teacher but as a musician. He can be seen playing his Spanish guitar and singing at Prague's buzzy cultural pub, Balbínova poetická hospudka (Balbínova 6, Prague 2) at least once a month with his band, Madera.

The facility's new location, at the corner of Letenska and U Luzickeho seminare, offers a greatly expanded space and more openness, if a 5-minute walk from school. AAU is trying to cater to students and make changes to keep up with surrounding schools, says Michael LeMoine, Student Council president, as well as a worker in the library.

Parking in the "Jungle"

Anglo-American University, in the heart of the beautiful Mala Strana district, next to Charles Bridge and surrounded by historic sights, can nevertheless be a nightmare setting for some: drivers. Aside from choked traffic, parking in this area is highly problematic because of narrow lanes and inadequate space.

Anglo-American University's new student council president, Mario Nicolaou, approaches his job with more realism than idealism.
"It's not about saying, it's about doing," said Nicolaou, "What I say happens; that's how I am."
The purpose of student council is to promote student activities and build cohesiveness among the student body. But AAU has only about 450 students and some students take only one or two classes. Many lack the time for or interest in building a community.
In addition, the council's budget is limited to just CZK 60,000 a year.
