In the Spirit of the John Lennon Wall
At the Lennon Wall Online is the student newspaper at Anglo-American University, an independent, English-language university founded in 1991. The newspaper takes its name from the John Lennon Wall, a symbol of freedom of expression only a few steps from the university's campus in Mala Strana, one of the oldest and most beautiful parts of Prague. During the communist era, young Czechs defied tyranny by exercising their freedom of expression at that wall. Their messages were removed by the authorities again and again. But the students put their messages back, again and again.
The Anglo-American University's journalism students, who come from all over the rest of the world, feel a part of that tradition. Their goal is to produce an independent newspaper whose devotion to free expression and truth lives up to the spirit of the Lennon Wall. The university's administration applauds that goal and pledges a policy of non-interference with regard to the content of the student publication. Most of the paper's stories and commentary are produced in a journalism laboratory course.
The newspaper was established in 2000 by Charles Hood, the first director of the journalism program who became the publication's faculty adviser, and Gorjan Lazarov, a Macedonian journalism student who became its first editor. Hood, the former dean of The University of Montana School of Journalism in the United States, served as director from 2000 to 2004.
Mission of At the Lennon Wall Online
The mission of At the Lennon Wall Online is to report news of interest to the students and to the campus community of the Anglo-American University in Prague. The journalism program uses the newspaper as a laboratory to train students to be news reporters, feature writers and commentators. The reporting instructor has a dual role as an editor and adviser of the newspaper. He or she works with designated student editors and reporting students to plan the contents of each issue and assign the stories. In keeping with the spirit of Article 17 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedom of the Czech Republic, the student newspaper is guaranteed freedom of expression and the right to gather information. The new Anglo-American University administration supports those rights and pledges not to interfere with the content of the student publication.
